Our History

The Houston County Republican Women (HCRW) are proud to be part of a rich legacy of Republican women who helped build and strengthen the Republican Party throughout Alabama.

The modern movement began in the 1950s when Mary Ellen Miller, Founding President of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women (AFRW), organized Republican women across the state at a time when Alabama was overwhelmingly governed by one political party. Through her vision, determination, and leadership, local Republican Women’s Clubs were established throughout Alabama, creating a network of women committed to promoting conservative values, encouraging civic engagement, and electing Republican candidates.

Following her work with the Mobile Republican Women’s Club, Mary Ellen Miller attended the 1960 Republican National Convention and later the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) Conference in Washington, D.C. There she entered into what she described as a “handshake agreement” with the National Federation of Republican Women to organize Republican Women’s Clubs throughout Alabama. Her efforts ultimately led to the formation of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women, making Alabama one of the nation’s active state federations.

As one of the early clubs to affiliate with the Alabama Federation of Republican Women, the Houston County Republican Women proudly became part of this historic movement. Our club has continued the mission established by those pioneering women—promoting conservative principles, supporting Republican candidates, educating voters, encouraging civic involvement, and developing future leaders within our community.

Today, Houston County Republican Women proudly serve as District III within the Alabama Federation of Republican Women. We are honored to recognize Miss Kathryn Lane as our Pioneer Member of the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW). Her dedication and commitment to the Republican Party helped establish a strong foundation upon which our club continues to build today.

For decades, HCRW has remained committed to preserving the values of faith, family, freedom, and constitutional government while providing opportunities for women to become informed, engaged, and effective leaders in Houston County and throughout Alabama.

As we look toward the future, we remain inspired by the vision of the women who came before us and committed to ensuring that their legacy continues for generations to come.

Historical Timeline

• 1956 – Mary Ellen Miller organized the Mobile Republican Women’s Club.
• 1960 – Mary Ellen Miller attended the Republican National Convention as an Alabama delegate.
• 1961 – A “Handshake Agreement” with the National Federation of Republican Women led to the organization of Republican Women’s Clubs throughout Alabama.
• 1961 – The Alabama Federation of Republican Women was established.
• Early 1960s – Houston County Republican Women became one of the early affiliated clubs within the Alabama Federation of Republican Women.
• Today – HCRW proudly serves District III of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women, continuing the mission of educating voters, supporting Republican candidates, and strengthening conservative leadership throughout Houston County.
